Starting in Chiang Mai and concluding in Chiang Rai, this 12 day fashion and textile tour of North Thailand will take you and our group on a once in a lifetime adventure. Traveling through the country’s magnificent mountainous regions you will visit hill tribe artisans to learn about their way of life and participate in traditional art and textile workshops such as; batik and silversmithing with the Hmong, applique with the Akha, fringed collar making with the Mien and back strap weaving and embellishment workshops with the Dara-Ang.

This tour is diverse and varied; it includes nights in rural home stays as well as shopping trips in the big cities. No trip to Thailand is complete without marveling at its beautiful temples, and all of these excursions will come together to create an all encompassing experience you’ll never forget. The tour is limited to 8 people, meaning you will have a hands on, authentic experience like no other.

Day 1 Friday 12th January: Welcome to Chiang Mai (Meals provided: Dinner)

  • Arrive in Chiang Mai after international flight, pick up and transfer from the airport to Ban Thai Village hotel.

  • Welcome dinner and introduction to the itinerary.


Day 2 Saturday 13th January: Experience Thai Culture – Chiang Mai   (B, L, D)

  • Breakfast at the hotel followed by traditional samlor tour of Chiang Mai old city.

  • Visit Suan Dok temple to see Buddhist monks and learn about their traditional robes.

  • Lunch.

  • Free time for shopping and opportunity to visit some of Chiang Mai’s oldest fabric stores.

  • Dinner and traditional Thai dancing show at Old Chiang Mai restaurant.

  • Overnight at Ban Thai Village Hotel.


Day 3 Sunday 14th January: Hmong Arts & Textiles – Ban Mae Sa Mai (B, L, D)

  • Breakfast at the hotel followed by a scenic drive to the Hmong village of Ban Mae Sa Ma.

  • Meet with our Hmong hosts who will introduce and explain their traditional dress, textile techniques and local customs before participating in traditional applique and batik workshops. It is also possible to make silver jewellery for yourself for a extra fee.  

  • Help to prepare lunch with our hosts and learn Hmong cooking recipes.

  • Workshops continue.

  • Dinner and overnight at Hmong homestay.


Day 4 Monday 15th January: Hmong Village Life (B, L)

  • Breakfast at our homestay.

  • Take a short trek around the village, meeting more Hmong locals and seeing their way of life.  

  • Continue with Hmong arts and textile workshops.

  • Lunch with our hosts.

  • Drive to Chiang Mai.

  • Free time in the evening for shopping, traditional massage etc.

  • Overnight at Ban Thai Village hotel


Day 5 Tuesday 16th January: Studio Naenna Indigo Workshop (B, L)

  • Breakfast at hotel.

  • Transfer to Studio Naenna where we will have a full day of natural indigo dyeing workshops. We start with an introduction to Studio Naenna, the Weavers for the Environment, natural dyes of the region and a natural dye demonstration. We continue with a Karen back-strap loom weaving demonstration followed by an introduction to Lao-Tai textiles covering the different community styles and historical background.

  • Lunch at Studio Naenna.

  • Introduction to tie dye techniques, start hands on workshop, instruction for the tie-dye and shibori techniques. Each person will receive fabric for creating their own tie-dye textile.

  • Return to hotel.

  • Free evening in Chiang Mai.

  • Overnight at Ban Thai Village hotel.


Day 6 Wednesday 17th January : Meeting the Dara-Anh (B, L, D)

  • Breakfast at the hotel.

  • Visit Chiang Mai Hill Tribe Museum to get an overview of all the diverse hill tribe communities that live in Thailand.

  • Drive to Chiang Dao, lunch en route.

  • Arrive at the scenic Dara-Ang village where we will meet our hosts who will give us a short guided tour of their community.

  • Meet the Dara-Ang ladies who will introduce us to their traditional dress and textile techniques including backstrap weaving and embellishment decorations. Photo opportunity with the Dara-Anh ladies.

  • Help cook dinner with our hosts. Overnight at a homestay in the village. Breakfast at the homestay.


Day 7 Thursday 18th January:  Meeting with the Lisu (B, L)

  • Optional 1-2 hour nature walk through the village countryside.

  • Continue Dara-Anh textile workshops.

  • Lunch with our hosts.

  • Drive to nearby Lisu hill tribe village.

  • Guided walking tour of Lisu village where we will learn about the Lisu traditional dress, textiles and their way of life.

  • Drive to Thaton.

  • Overnight in Maekok River Village Resort.


Day 8 Friday 19th January: Making with the Mien – Thaton (B, L)

  • Breakfast at the resort.

  • Boat ride on the Kok River to Lahu Village, Phatai. The boat ride takes about 45 mins. Then, drive to Mien Village.

  • Arrive at Mien village where we will have a short tour of the village before meeting our hosts who will introduce us to their traditional dress, textiles and way of life.

  • Textile workshop learning how to make the Mien’s distinctive and impressive red collar.  

  • Lunch and photo opportunity with our hosts.

  • Drive to Chiang Rai.

  • Check into La Luna resort.

  • Our driver will take us to the night market where everyone will have free time to shop and eat dinner.

  • Overnight at the hotel.


Day 9  Saturday 20th January:  Applique with the Akha Chiang Rai (B, L, D)

  • Breakfast at hotel.

  • Drive to Akha Village.

  • Arrive at Akha village where we will have a short tour of the village before meeting our host who will introduce us to their traditional dress, textiles and way of life.

  • Full day of Akha textile activities learning applique, embellishment and feather techniques used in their traditional dress. 

  • Lunch and dinner with our hosts.

  • Night time community bonfire dance where the women from the village sing under the stars. This is a truly spectacular event.

  • Overnight at the Akha homestay.


Day 10 Sunday 21st January: Akha Village  (B, L, D)

  • Breakfast with our host.

  • Opportunity to go for a short 1-2 hour morning hike.

  • Lunch with our hosts.

  • Continue textile activities.

  • Dinner with our hosts.

  • Overnight at homestay.


Day 11 Monday 22nd January: Temple trekking in Chiang Rai (B, D)

  • Breakfast with our hosts.

  • Board a local boat back to Chiang Rai. The boat ride takes about 30 mins.

  • Spend the morning visiting famous traditional Thai religious monuments Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, and Wat Rong Sua Ten, the Blue Temple.

  • Check into La Luna Resort. Free afternoon.

  • Car and driver available for visit to the night market and farewell dinner.

  • Overnight at La Luna resort.


Day 12 Tuesday : Fly home – Chiang Rai (B)

  • Breakfast at the resort

  • Option to extend your stay or check out (must be booked in advance).

  • Whole group transfers to Chiang Rai airport.

  • Flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok.

  • End of tour.
